Use Math Skill Builders' Diagnostics Wizard to identify students' strengths and weaknesses in arithmetic skills. This web-based application is a tool to help identify arithmetic objectives for individual students learning arithmetic.

Follow these steps to run the Diagnostics Wizard:
  1. Start the wizard.
  2. Choose whether you want to assess Arithmetic Facts or specific Arithmetic skills.
    • If you choose Arithmetic Facts:
      • Specify the highest fact table you want assessed, then choose addition, subtraction, multiplication or division facts.
    • If you choose Arithmetic Skills:
      • Select the type of arithmetic problem to assess: whole numbers, decimals, or fractions. Then choose arithmetic operation: addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division.
  3. Read the directions to the student if necessary and click Start. The wizard presents a series of arithmetic problems that become progressively difficult as the student solves problems. If the student misses a problem, a similar problem is presented to determine if the student can solve that type of problem. When the student misses two problems of the same difficulty level, the diagnostic ends. Students may want to use pencil and paper to solve the arithmetic problems before entering their answers.
  4. View a summary of the student performance at the end of the diagnostic.
    • The summary includes:
      • Diagnosis: How the student did, including the highest arithmetic skill level achieved.
      • Prescription: Suggestions for the most appropriate arithmetic objectives for the student.
    • MathSkillBuilders.com members who have subscribed to "On Demand" services receive more detailed information including PDF reports.

The Diagnostics Wizard is a brief screening instrument. To get more accurate results, repeat it occasionally.

Skill levels are specified in the Math Skill Builders' Skill Level Definitions for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers, decimals and fractions.
